  20.      Ultima III, like Sensible Speller, ignores a ramcard in any other slot then 0.  Using Messiah, with the card in slot 1, we can easily crack Ultima III.  Messiah's normal restarting routine will not work however, so we will have to specify a location for it to jump to.

  23. Here's how:
  24.  
  25. 1) Copy the backside of Ultima III onto the backside of your blank disk with Copya.
  26.  
  27. 2) Turn off your computer and put your ramcard in slot 1.  Start Messiah (RUN MESSIAH START) and respond with 1 when it asks what slot your ramcard is in.  Then choose the cracker option.
  28.  
  29. 3) Boot Ultima III.  Let "EXODUS" appear, and then let the dragon fry the men.  When the "INSERT GAME DISK- 1,2" prompt appears and the drive stops, insert the front side of your blank disk.  It does not have to be initialized.  Then hit <RESET>.  After a seconds pause, the drive will start whirring along nicely.

  31. 4) When Messiah is finished it will say "Type Ctrl-y to test your crack".  Ignore this.  Instead, type:

  35. The first instructions at the top right-hand of the screen should be:

  40. If they are not, don't worry.  You have the earlier version of the game.  Type:

  44. You should now see the above instructions.  One of these two will be the starting location for our Ultima III.  Write down which one looked correct for you so you don't forget.

  46. : DON'T FORGET TO STICK YOUR RAMCARD BACK IN SLOT 0 IF YOU NORMALLY USE IT THERE! AND TURN OFF YOUR APPLE TWO (TOO?) :

  48. 5) Boot normal Dos 3.3 and start Messiah again.  Messiah saved a loader on our Ultima III that requires the ramcard in slot 1.  Since you will probably want to put your ramcard back in slot 0, we will have to change this.

  50. 6) Type 0 to tell Messiah that your ramcard is in slot 0.  Choose the reloader option.  Fill in the options as below.

  52. Hi-res Screen = 1
  53. Full Screen = 1
  54. Exit = 1
  55. To location : 10F5 (or 10F3)
  56. Save to disk : Y
  57.  
  58. To use this crack boot the front, and, when the drive stops, turn the disk over and press 1.

  60. Note on speeding up Messiah's loader:
  61.  
  62. This works on all Messiah created disks.  Use Init from Bag of Tricks and re-init (saving data of course) tracks 2-34 with an ascending (yes, ascending) skew of 2.  This cuts the load time down to about 12 seconds.  Not bad for 48k.
